What plant is this?

Post by Grandad »

My mother in law died 21 years ago and some years before she died she planted a very small cutting on our bank. That was about 25 years ago and that little plant has grown to this pretty yellow flowering bush. We have never known what it is called, do any of you folks know?
This is how it looks today, it will produce even more flowers, lots of buds can be seen in picture #2. The flowers don't last long and very soon die off?

I think it is St John's Wort. Should be fairly low spreading with lots of yellow flowers.

That was a quick reply LLL. I think you are probably correct BUT online images look like this with a cluster of stamens

My flowers look like this with just a stigma and no stamen?

I've just lost a reply twice!

I think that yours is a Hypericum, one of the less robust varieties and probably looses its leaves in the winter.

The bigger varieties tend to have glossy leaves and be semi-evergreen. They make rounded mounds which can be 5-6 feet tall.

That was my first comment before your second post Grandad. Your plant does indeed have a close ring of fuzzy looking stamens around the base of the stigma. :up
Smile! It confuses people
