To Sprout or Not to Sprout
Seems this time of year the stores bring in thousands of those little tiny green cabbage things known as Brussel Sprouts.
I figure them as an evil creation as really they were meant to be big cabbages that somehow got stunted and in their angst over not being able to grow they developed this yucky taste.
I know that some people slather them in butter (butter tastes good) but I can't see butter being sufficient to kill the taste of a sprout and other people makes creams and sauces to improve the taste - but really should you be eating a food that needs butter, cream or sauce to make it edible.
There are some who feel the traditional Christmas meal isn't complete unless there are sprouts. I used to give in to the pressure and cook them - boiled the little bu**ers 'til they nearly fell apart but they still tasted yucky and if I didn't put at least one onto my plate they'd taunt me from the dish - BUT - not this year. NO SPROUTS!
Are you a sprouter? Or have you also opted to join my club and NOT SPROUT?

Re: To Sprout or Not to Sprout
We grew up with them, so .........! I think you either love 'em or hate 'em; bit like Marmite! Good old British tradition. I love them but I certainly wouldn't eat them if they were boiled to death! 10 minutes cooking time, and no cross in the bottom either. They do have one drawback though. Flatulence is rife afterwards and incredibly smelly!

Definitely Sprout!
Ruby is right, if it wasn't for the gas, I could eat a whole plate, nothing else. Mmmmmn
Sprout tops are delicious too, but you won't see them for sale.

Me too, I love Sprouts, but hate the fact that they stink the place out when cooking as I like to lightly boil them. I never add anything to them as a rule, but this year I have bought some Sweet Chestnuts so may add a few chopped up into them. Yummy, Yummy Sprouts

Re: To Sprout or Not to Sprout
Over the past couple of weeks, I've been seeing a few different methods of cooking sprouts and one particular one I will try is finely chopped sprouts, with chestnuts and bacon lardons, fried in butter.

Re: To Sprout or Not to Sprout
Sprout equals the Latin - 'Gaseous Asseous' who was always consigned out to the pastures with the sheep.
They are very popular here and are brought in still attached to the stalks (not sure this keeps them fresher but it does give a different element to display) and many here treat them as MUST HAVES for Christmas dinner.
Guess they'll have to remain of the veggies I love to hate - just can't get the flavor of them so the question - to sprout or not to sprout

Re: To Sprout or Not to Sprout
I love 'em but they must NOT be over cooked. And I saw that recipe RS, was it James Martin? Sounds really yummy. Sprout tops are good too but they also need cooking properly. But I love all vegetables, green, white, pink, yellow or whatever.
But no sprouts tomorrow. We have changed Christmas completely this year and are having a sort of surf and turf smorgasbord. An absolute minimum of cooking time in the kitchen and much more time together as a family.......we love our seafood.

Gheez Grandad - all your "Surf and Turf" meals are definitely making my mouth water! (I particularly like the SURF part!)

Re: To Sprout or Not to Sprout
On the surf front, I purchased myself a very nice pre-cooked Red Crab still in its shell for later in the holiday when I will have had enough Turkey and Roast Pork and a nice salad will seem very appetizing.

Re: To Sprout or Not to Sprout
Minimal breakfast today, don't want to spoil the appetite for later BUT I can assure you there will not be a roast potato, or brussels sprout, or turkey crown in sight.
And tomorrow French daughter in law is cooking something different but that is still a secret surprise.

Re: To Sprout or Not to Sprout
As I dont bother with Xmas stuff ... heres a story instead. One winter, when I was at school and had 4 ponies, money was short and I went sprouting. They gave me a small knife and gloves. 8 hours a day for a week, I thought my fingers would never work again with the freezing cold. When we had cleared the field he gave the cash out - - I hate sprouts.

Re: To Sprout or Not to Sprout
It was hop picking around here. We would even return to school in September a week late so the 'hopping' could get finished. That is when few mums worked so everyone, mum and all the kids, went to the hop fields each day. Some hop fields had a row of simple chalets for the Londoners who came down for the season. Happy Days.
