Star Trek is 50!
Just saw on TV this morning that Star Trek is 50! To celebrate this our Canadian Mint is printing out a silver coin to celebrate - and, of course, you can BUY this coin for lots of $$ direct from them
I'm not really a trekkie nor am I buying a coin but way back when I did enjoy Star Trek. Really spurred my imagination as to what is up and out there. Right now the Twins are totally fascinated with Star Wars (but I think another sequel or prequel or something Star Wars came out this past Christmas)
Do you remember Star Wars? Were you a fan? Who was your favourite character?

Star Trek, yes ,,, and the song is soooo funny - someone put it on with their Christmas Light Show. Star Wars, bits were ok but through most of them I went to sleep - boring. Never liked those silly laser swords, give me a nice gun every time !

I think Star Trek started the entire "Star" series of Wars and other outer space adventures. At the time it definitely sparked my interest and even now I do wonder what life on other planets looks like and if we really do have intelligent counterparts somewhere........???

Cute one H!
Who had the cloaking device? Was it the Kling-ons?
And then came the BORG!! (But I think that was well into the series when Cap't Kirk was gone and not sure if that was still even called Star Trek?)

Yes it was the Klingons
Each Star Trek series had a tag such as Star Trek 'Next Generation' or Star Trek 'Deep Space Nine' etc.

Re: Star Trek is 50!
Yeahhhhhh - now that you say it it comes back. I think I was fascinated through "Next Generation" but "Deep Space" wasn't nearly as intriguing so I'm not sure I was watching it weekly as I was when it first appeared on the Screen.
I'm also not too sure when Star Wars emerged in relation to Star Trek but I think I was more interested in the Trekkies as the characters seemed more interesting. Loved C3PO and R2D2. Now the twins favourites are Yoda, Luke Skywalker and Hans Solo.
LEGO toys have definitely sucked up to all things Star Wars as almost all LEGO these days for kids is making a Star Wars space ship or character. AND the kits are literally flying off the shelves too!!! (Wish I had stock in LEGO!)
On another note I don't know if our Royal Canadian Mint actually makes a mint out of doing designer coins. Selling this one with the Star Trek Enterprise for $20 worth of pure silver but no idea how big this coin actually is.

That song makes me giggle every time I hear it - thankyou Horus - That house didnt win that year, the winner was the the house lights playing to TSO and Wizards in Winter, another one of my favourites.

I wonder if, way back when, the Creators of Star Trek and Star Wars actually created some of the ideas i.e. wireless communications OR if they were actually capitalizing on research that was already going on?
Teleporting oneself about the world always fascinated me.

If only teleporting was available. The one thing I hate about travelling is the indignity of being rudely packed into an oversized cigar tube with loads of others for hours on end
Life is not measured by the breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Re: Star Trek is 50!
I hear you BBLUX - I have to admit I hate sitting beside an oversized person who half leans on me for hours on end. I almost always insist on an aisle seat so I can at least have ONE side of me open. I also don't like it when people sneeze and cough either. We are ALL breathing it for umpteen hours.
Am not sure it is my imagination as I know I'm not getting any taller but I swear the seats are being put closer together as often my knees now touch the seat in front of me AND if they lean back if my tray is open it can almost touch my chest. CRAMMED? (yesssssss we are!!!)
