The Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio

Post by Horus » Mon Jan 18, 2016 4:47 pm

Last night I watched the Oscar nominated film the ‘Revenant’ which features Leonardo DiCaprio. Not a bad film but a tad too long IMO and I was freezing bloody cold watching it, why? Well it is mainly shot in Canada and there is not a bit of sunshine in it, every scene takes place in deep snow or freezing weather or with DiCaprio slopping around in icy cold rivers. It is supposedly based on some true story, but to be honest what he has to endure would kill a bull Elephant from hyperthermia never mind him. He leaps into rivers with snow 3 foot high on the river banks whilst fully clothed in his mangy old animal skins then sleeps knee deep in snow against a tree, I kid you not I was never warm all through the film. The storyline is a bit hard to grasp at times and the actors speaking like ‘mountain men’ doesn’t help as it comes out as mostly mumbles through a thick beard, so you cant even lip read. The scenery is to say the least spectacular, but although it is in colour you tend to feel it’s a bit mono because of the huge amounts of snow and pristine rivers that look silvery black coupled with tall trees and forests and everyone wearing drab clothing and furs. The lighting is also natural light with no artificial stuff, so the imagery was to my eyes a bit on the dark side and could have done with brightening up a little. Overall I enjoyed it and I am sure that it will be a big hit and win plenty of Oscars and it portrays exceptionally well the absolute beauty of LLL’s Canadian wilderness of British Columbia and Alberta, plus Squamish, Fortress Mountain and Calgary to name a few locations.

not a bit of sunshine in...the actors speaking like ‘mountain men’ doesn’t help as it comes out as mostly mumbles through a thick beard,
:vc: :vc:

OMG - they must've been shooting HERE! :vc: :vc: As we truly don't get much sun and lots of men do grow beards over winter and the mumbling is about the way quite a few do speak here :( Sounds like it really was really realistic Canada :) Dunno about jumping into the freezing rivers though as "WE" are not silly enough to do that. Cold kills and kills FAST so getting yourself wet is a definite 'do not do' as frost bite is also super painful.

I haven't seen the film yet but did get a post on FB from a gf and she said she thought it was excellent.

I have no idea how early settlers managed a Canadian winter. I know they survived on the prairies by scooping and digging low shallow impressions into the ground throwing a few logs overtop and covering those with branches and buffalo skins. A few snow falls later you at least had a wind break but I can't believe going months and months and months in that bitter cold (it easily easily will hit MINUS 40 or so and stay there for months) and mostly dark. No idea how they found enough game to live on in open prairie and why scurvy didn't take them is beyond me.

IF they were lucky enough to get to the Rockies (mountains) they still had the seriously bitter cold to cope with but they at least had trees they could make pole tents out of for shelter and would give them fuel for fires. In the low lands there would have been lots of game animals so food would not have been as hard to come by but living conditions would have been abysmal. No such thing as taking a bath to rid yourself of fleas and lice (although lice MIGHT freeze off of your outer layers).

Now in this day and age if you're up a mountain or on the prairies you wear survival suits with all new modern thermals and battery equipped to keep you warm. Back then it was ill fitting animal skins. No way you could have ever been warm at all. Must have been a very miserable existence. Living a life being hunched over a smoky fire that needs constant stoking isn't my idea of life.

I've kinda got the Reverent on my list to go see but I'm not really an avid show goer and usually prefer to wait 'til movies come out on TV (or now Netflix).

Hope you're warmed up now H! Nothing like a hot cuppa :cuppa: once you're home. ;) ;)

I doubt he watched it on regular tv LLL ;)

I cant bring myself to get excited about the film, despite all its hype and oscar nominations etc because i just cant stand Leo DC.

It will be a film i watch much later in the year when it gets to sky movies, unless its on the plance next month.

I watched it on the Kodi channel on my TV, but must agree that he was not one of my favourite actors although to be fair he has improved over the years, 'Shutter Island' was quite a good film. :up

We are not big on watching films, Mrs G tends to lose patience and interest.

But, having seen interviews about the making of this film and some clips, it seems that it was filmed in real situations with genuine actual locations and natural lighting so I think it deserves many of its nominations. I have also heard it is a bit too long so Mrs G would be distracted elsewhere before the end.

Last film we saw in a cinema was Les Miserables and that was only to compare it with the London production that we have seen twice.......the stage show wins hands down. :up

I've heard very little about this film until I saw it was nominated for an Oscar and then H mentioned it. Have no idea what it is about and didn't even know it was filmed in Canada but I'm not much of a movie buff.

I have Netflix so I'll probably wait 'til it comes on there. We also get CRAVE TV which is a clone of Netflix. I don't know if what they carry movie-wise is sufficiently different though so I haven't gone through the gyrations of trying to get CRAVE hooked up.

I'm good to sit through a movie that is UP to 2 hours long. And if the movie doesn't keep moving forward and capture my attention I can lose interest fast. Some of the movies that are 3 hours are just too long for me.

Now that Leo D C has reached adulthood his movies IMO seem to be better. I liked Shutter Island. I also think he was in "Blood Diamond" and I liked that movie too. Have never watched Titanic and doubt I ever will.

Im sure he does wonderful things Jay, but he has a face that looks smug and is just asking to be punched repeatedly. I cant explain why I just cant take to him, and it wasnt even Titanic that put me off. I would watch a film with him in, but not seek it out intentionally. There are some actors, if even just on the cast list, will draw me into watching a film, regardless of the content. Leo DC just makes me feel like i will maybe catch up with it on sky movies in 8 months time.

I thought that he would win as the scenery is pretty spectacular which made it a good film regardless, I may even watch it again on my new big TV ;)
