Bringing back the memories

Post by Horus »

They are showing a program on TV sometime this week called ‘La Bamba’ and it got me thinking music wise to back to when a plane crash in February of 1959 killed several famous singers of that era, namely Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP Richardson who was also known as the ‘Big Bopper’

I don’t suppose that many people today realise that when they are singing along with the hit song ‘American Pie’ by Don McClean, and they get to the line in the song that goes “the day the music died” it is a reference to this actual event and the loss of those singers.

I also remember a particularly sad song that was released soon after the event and it was called ‘The three Stars’ and it would bring a tear to most of our young eyes as we listened to it on the radio. Up until I looked it up again today on You Tube I had not heard it for more than 50 years. :o

“On the right stand Buddy Holly with a shy grin on his face”

“In the middle stands a stout man, the Big Bopper was his name”

And to complete this little medley of songs that triggered it all in my memory when I saw the program title of ‘La Bamba’ being advertised

And here is Lou Diamond Philips acting the part in what I reckon will be the advertised TV program.

I was quite young when the plane crash happened so I didn't really register it personally however I came to love all the songs those guys wrote and performed. They were all GREAT! "La Bamba" is still a favourite of mine. 8)
