BOMB ALERTS

Post by Grandad »

Three weeks ago there were two 'suspicious' packages found at different locations in my home city of Canterbury and also a suspicious fire in the baby changing room of M & S. These were all within a very short period on the afternoon in question.

This caused a near shut down of the whole city (it is actually very small and less than half a mile across the city centre) with people evacuated, trains cancelled because one package was on a trackside, and people unable to retrieve their cars from city centre car parks. The restrictions were not fully lifted until the next day.

At mid afternoon today another 'suspicious' package was found in the vicinity of the Cathedral (but not in the precincts). Once again a significant shut down, bomb disposal squad called to carry out controlled explosion, restrictions lifted about four hours later. The remains of the explosion to be examined by forensics.

It seems likely that all of these will prove to either be hoax's or simply dumped or mislayed bundles or packages. Of course the emergency services MUST take every one seriously but I DO think they are far too slow in getting things moving again once it has been proven that there is no danger.

These events don't make national news and I was wondering if you folks have the same problems in your areas which the rest of us never know about.

Nothing of the sort around here Grandad. Swansea is my nearest city and seems to be moving reasonably well. A great relief after years of misery while specialist bus lanes for bendy buses were installed. It sounds like kids discovering that they really can "make a difference" even a miserable one :) . I agree that this sort of thing seems to take forever to sort out.
