Police and forensic officials say a small bomb exploded near Egypt’s iconic pyramids, injuring three peddlers.
The officials say the explosives were leftover munitions, but they couldn't provide more details about when or why the bomb was planted. They say Wednesday's explosion occurred some 500 feet (150 meters) from the pyramids outside Cairo.
The officials say the explosion was triggered by peddlers who saw metal glinting out of the sand and began hitting it with iron sticks, thinking the casing might conceal valuable goods. Three of them were seriously wounded.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't allowed to release the information.

They certainly need to get to the bottom of this quickly before it causes people to think there is more to it than meets the eye.
More likely it will turn out to be a bit of WW2 ordnance left over from an British Army arms dump, if so then they should get the information out quickly and instigate a full sweep of the area for any further shells that may be lying buried. If it is as it seems, a WW2 shell then it must be a rogue one left over as it is unlikely that a major dump would not have been cleared, I suppose there is a small chance it was an old land mine rather than an artillery shell. Either way, all the anti Brit brigade will be blaming us for leaving it there. It seems that any dessert explosion must be one of ours. strange how the Brit Bashers never mention German or Italian mines though which formed the largest numbers.

Not if it does turn out to be WW2 stuff, remember that there was a military radio station on top of the Great Pyramid at one time during the last war, so it is possible that there was also munitions stored nearby, always assuming that it was an old shell that went bang and not something else.Christine wrote:Im suprised who ever left it that it was so close to the hstorical sites
