Re: Public urination: A Cairo problem

This article makes it seem like it is a lot worse than it is. It's really only in out of the way corners you aren't likely to go in anyway. On the other hand, there's plenty of public peeing going on in Luxor AND since a lot of that is being done by horses that have a lot more pee to release, the sm...

Re: Oh what a shiner

The goshawk - maybe just great luck :up Luck that the bird noticed him in the first place and luck that he didn't get more than a scratch :up :up Actually he is the one who noticed the bird first. He'd been watching it up in the tree for about a minute before it swooped down and attacked. And when ...

Re: Oh what a shiner

My father actually has walked through a glass door 2 days after it had been cleaned (and it broke) and was only slightly injured, and in another incident was attacked by a goshawk who swooped down and took his hat off and scratched his forehead in the process. Both were real incidents, not excuses. ;)

Re: Oh what a shiner

This happened to my mother. She had some sort of growth on her eyelid that needed to be removed and the doctor injected her with local anesthesia before removing it that burst a vein, giving her a black eye. She was a teacher and was too embarrassed to tell her students the truth about it, so she to...

Re: When in Rome.....?

I'm kinda coming back to Ruby Slippers original thread referencing mass immigration. . Suppose this was in reverse. Lets use Luxor as an example where there is a "Little Britain." Sure lots of Expats have left now but when Luxor was flying high and in it's glory nobody there was conformin...

and now the latest investigation on spending has found Obama is funding mosques all over the world . . ha ha ha Well Jay according to some, he was born a Muslim ;) I used to live in the same neighborhood as Obama. One time when his campaign for president was just starting, I was eating dinner in on...

I have never met anyone who has a problem with the term and have never heard anyone suggest it makes them less American or less patriotic because of it. Everyone uses it.

Loyalty and origins are not mutually exclusive.

Re: When in Rome.....?

Your properties may be largish but the average home size in the UK is really tiny!

Re: Multiple Wives and Welfare

Fair enough, I'll rephrase it. The complaints that I personally hear most frequently from UK citizens about their own country involve benefits of various kinds and the feeling that other people (never the complainers it seems) receiving them don't deserve/need them for a variety of reasons. Contrast...

Re: When in Rome.....?

I'm not talking about the distance between homes, I'm talking about social interaction. People still have to go to school, work, shopping etc. and interact with others in those settings.

Re: Multiple Wives and Welfare

Why are they getting welfare to support even one wife abroad? Why are non-citizens getting welfare payments? The British complain about their welfare system all the time but I don't see them doing anything to change it. I googled it and while I do find about them getting welfare for multiple wives i...

Re: When in Rome.....?

I think another difference between Canada/US and the UK is the background of the immigrants from Asia/Africa in each country. Most Asians and Africans in the US and probably Canada too are highly educated and relatively wealthy. Egyptians in the US, for example, are far, far more educated than the a...

Re: When in Rome.....?

Your comparisons of Canada with UK are also misleading, according to the 2013 UN trends in immigration figures Canada (a much larger country land mass wise) had 7,284,069 immigrants whereas the UK (a relatively small island) had 7,824,131 immigrants, so we beat them in that distinction. The UK is h...

Re: When in Rome.....?

Canada has a higher percentage of foreign born population than the UK. But I do sense a lot more dissatisfaction from the UK than I do from Canadians or Americans. But then Canada and the US didn't sell themselves into EU slavery either. ;) There's much more local autonomy in making laws in the US a...

Re: What sort of religion behaves like this?

You know, there are so many people suffering injustices in the world. If we raised our voices about every case there would be no time left in the day to do anything else, especially in cases where we can actually make a difference. We must choose our battles wisely.

Re: What sort of religion behaves like this?

And where did I say that it was the reciting of a prayer that made halal meat less desirable to me? Let me reiterate so as to avoid you from continually veering off the path of what my objection to halal meat is in order to suit your own argument. “I object to the practice of slitting any animals t...

Re: What sort of religion behaves like this?

As I said at the OP, I object to being force fed meat slaughtered in a method I disapprove of and certainly don’t want someone reciting fairy stories over it just to comply with another’s dietary requirements. Let's leave aside the slaughter methods for a second because I can understand and respect...

Re: What sort of religion behaves like this?

A green salad is halal, and kosher and also acceptable to Hindus and fasting Coptic Christians. Is that a reason to not eat it? Everything a Muslim is allowed to eat is halal, not just meat slaughtered a certain way, so if you want to avoid halal food, you are going to have to avoid a lot more than ...

Re: What sort of religion behaves like this?

5 seconds of suffering at the end or a whole year of living in cramped conditions? Do we really know whether the animal we eat has suffered unless we raise it and slaughter it ourselves? I bought Sudanese beef last week. Maybe it got its throat slit at the end but it probably enjoyed free range munc...
